Mapped Before The Shoot

VFX Storyboard

Cameras don't roll twice. Catch the problems before they're expensive.

The Work

Mapped before the camera rolls.

Storyboards, previs, postvis, shot breakdowns. Visualizations that align directors, DPs, and VFX supervisors before set day. The clearer the plan, the smaller the surprises in post.

We refine based on your feedback until the visuals match your vision.

What You Need to Provide

  • Script pages or scene descriptions
  • Lens type — wide, normal, long, anamorphic (the formal storyboard-to-VFX handoff field)
  • Camera movement — static, pan, tilt, dolly, crane, handheld
  • Action arrows and blocking notes — the third formal handoff field
  • Creative references or mood boards
  • Shot list (if available)
  • Location photos or set designs
  • Character descriptions or designs
  • Any technical constraints to consider

Turnaround

We typically deliver storyboard frames within 2-5 business days, based on complexity and frame count. Previs sequences take 1-3 weeks based on length and detail level.

Where This Fits In Your Pipeline

Storyboard runs upstream of everything else. The clearer the plan before cameras roll, the cleaner the post pipeline that follows. We board knowing how the shot will be tracked, mattes pulled, plates cleaned, and CG integrated. Brief storyboard alongside compositing, matchmove, or 3D CGI needs and we'll align the visualization with the post pipeline you'll need.

What Our Clients Say

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between storyboarding and previs?
Storyboards are static illustrated frames that show key moments. Previs is animated 3D work that shows camera movement, timing, and spatial layout. Both help plan VFX shots.
Can previs be used in the editorial cut?
Yes. We deliver previs at edit-ready resolution and frame rate. You can drop them straight into your timeline for pacing and timing tests.
How detailed are your storyboards?
We offer several detail levels. Quick rough sketches for planning, detailed line art for production reference (with the formal handoff fields — lens type, camera movement, action arrows — annotated on the frame), and fully rendered frames for client presentations and pitch decks.
Do you need a finalized script?
No. We can work from rough scene descriptions, treatment documents, or even verbal direction. The process itself often helps refine the creative.
Can you create VFX breakdowns from storyboards?
Yes. We annotate storyboards with VFX needs, shot complexity ratings, lens type, camera movement, and the technical notes that drive the bid sheet. Annotations carry forward into pre-production planning so the on-set team has the same shot intent the storyboard committed to.
